The Volunteer! Tulip is Blooming!
Recognition
The
United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 2001 as the International
Year of Volunteers.
In July 2000, as a symbol of international unity in volunteerism,
Rustie Brooke, Founder of the New York City Committee for the International
Year of Volunteers (NYC/IYV) and Daniel Kruithof, Netherlands National
Volunteer Center created the Old and New Amsterdam Honorary Municipal
Partnership. The Partnership is an informal exchange of volunteer
program information aimed at expanding and enhancing volunteerism
resources in Amsterdam and New York City.
NYC/IYV is an ongoing coalition of hundreds of civic, private, public,
academic and media organizations, networks and projects within the
five boroughs and on Long Island. New York City is a global leader
in volunteerism and the first city in the world to mobilize for IYV.
Working with United Nations Volunteers and the Netherlands Flower
Bulb Information Center (www.bulb.com)
10,000 exclusive, commemorative tulip bulbs named Volunteer! were
produced in celebration of this momentous year.
Tulipa Volunteer!
The Volunteer! follows in the illustrious path of other original
Dutch tulips such as the Barbara Bush, Joanne Woodward and Hillary
Clinton tulips. September-October 2001, 8,000 Volunteer! bulbs were
received and distributed throughout New York City by Historic House
Trust.
Volunteer! was planted in October 2001 at four locations in Amsterdam,
on the Park Avenue Mall at 57th Street, Manhattan and throughout the
five boroughs at the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation-Historic
House Trust.
Look for this stunning pink and white tulip at Dutch Historic Houses
in the Bronx at Van Cortlandt House Museum, in Brooklyn at Wyckoff
House Museum, in Queens at King Manor Museum, Queens Country Farm
Museum and Kingsland Homestead, in Staten Island at Alice Austen House
Museum and in Manhattan at Dyckman Farmhouse Museum and Merchant's
House Museum.
The Association for a Better New York's 2002 annual "New York
in Bloom" spring promotion will focus on the volunteer, re-vitalization
and beautification efforts of Lower Manhattan. ABNY encourages businesses
to add plantings and window box treatments to their establishments
that will enhance the city's image. ABNY presents annual "New
York in Bloom" certificates to those businesses that make an
outstanding contribution to the image enhancement and betterment of
New York.
In addition, ABNY will honor, Lokaal Comité 2001 Amsterdam,
the Netherlands Flower Bulb Information Center, the New York City
Parks & Recreation-Historic House Trust for planting 4220 Volunteer!
bulbs and the Park Avenue Malls Planting Project/Fund for Park Avenue
for planting 1000 Volunteer! bulbs, with their annual bloom award.
We invite you view the special memorial plaque donated by the Association
for a Better New York at the Park Avenue Mall at 57th Street and visit
Tulipa Volunteer! now in bloom around the City. A Volunteer! recognition
ceremony at Wyckoff House in Flatlands, Brooklyn on May 5th is planned.
The event will be held in conjunction with Wyckoff House's annual
Mother's Day Tea & Tulip festival.
We hope you enjoy this beautiful tulip and salute those individuals
and organizations that commit their time and energy to community service
every day.
