Giving Volunteers a Voice:
UK Program Teaches Volunteers to "Speak Up! Speak Out!" about What They Are Doing and Why They Love It!

In the new issue of the respected online periodical, e-Volunteerism: the Electronic Journal of the Volunteer Community, British consultant Martin Farrell introduces the volunteer community to Speak Up! Speak Out!, a unique project that "helps volunteers and volunteer managers become compelling ambassadors for volunteering by teaching communications skills." Farrell says:

Public speaking ranks alongside finance as the subject most likely to bring a look of panic to most people's eyes. 'I could never speak as well as he does.' 'She makes everything sound so interesting, I wish I could do that.' Well here's the good news - you can do that. And the bad news? There isn't any.

All of us who are passionate about volunteering being a 'powerful force for change' have lots of opportunities to inspire other people to be part of that change. I don't just mean those who get invited to give keynote speeches in front of hundreds of people at big conferences…I'm talking about the great majority of us in everyday situations who have the chance to speak about what we're doing and what moves us. . .

In each and all of these situations - and every day - we have opportunities to communicate with other people about what we're doing and what moves us. Some days we might get a second chance and some days we won't. Either way, it's great for us and it's great for volunteering if we tell 'it like it is' so it's heard and remembered. What moves us moves them.

Speak Up! Speak Out! is a collaboration of the National Centre for Volunteering and Toastmasters International in England, building on Toastmasters' ongoing work to help individuals overcome their fear of public speaking. The project gained momentum during the International Year of Volunteers 2001, offering communication courses specifically aimed at volunteer program managers.

e-Volunteerism makes use of Internet technology to allow Farrell to include audio of a real Speak Up! Speak Out! session, as well as link to relevant Web sites mentioned in the article. "The online format of the journal allows us to give readers a more in-depth understanding of this subject than we could ever had done in a standard print publication," says Susan J. Ellis, publishing editor of e-Volunteerism and President of Energize, Inc.

The "Go on, Speak Up! Speak Out!" article appears in Volume II, Issue 2 of e-Volunteerism: The Electronic Journal of the Volunteer Community at <www.e-volunteerism.com>.
