Mary Wiser was the innovative director
of volunteer services at the Courage Center in Minnesota, an internationally
renowned rehabilitation facility. She died of cancer this year but remains in
the memory of the many volunteer program managers who saw her as a mentor. Her
friends have culled her files to share some of her remaining training materials
and other words of wisdom.
When asked to contribute to this article, Sue Vineyard, author, consultant and
trainer in volunteerism, wrote the following eloquent testimonial to her friend
and colleague.
...Mary
left a legacy that can be an inspiration to us all as she blazed the
trail toward a higher level of professionalism. This higher level required
a change from the established Volunteer Manager as kind servant working
behind the scenes, to one of internal consultant devising workable systems
between staff supervisors and volunteers - and also leveraging success
so that she could take her rightful place at the highest decision-making
level.
