The government's Active Community Programme, for which the Home Office is the lead department in England, is a major policy initiative aimed at building an inclusive, cohesive and stable society in the United Kingdom. The Active Community Unit (ACU) has been tasked with leading the implementation of this programme in three main areas:

  • Volunteering: The government's aim is to increase opportunities for volunteering by as wide a cross-section of the community as possible, and especially by groups with low participation rates (young people, people from ethnic minorities, disabled people and older people)...
  • Infrastructure of the voluntary and community sector: The government's aim is to provide financial and practical support for the infrastructure - e.g., umbrella organisations and networks, technology and training, and dissemination of good practice...
  • Partnerships: The government's aim is to increase cooperation within the voluntary and community sector and between the voluntary and community sectors and the statutory and private sectors.

Creating partnerships will create synergies, maximise the potential of different types and sizes of organisations and stimulate innovation and achievement.
