Events on
11th September brought forth a great outpouring of emotion across the world.
Since then calls have been made for us as world citizens to reconsider our
values and priorities, to track the causes behind world disasters as well
as local troubles, and to work towards achieving a just and compassionate
world.
Volunteering
fits very much into humanitarian ideals, and people who work in this field
have a great opportunity to broaden their horizons, think deeply, and act
creatively in support of these ideals. A great deal of volunteer work is
motivated by a passionate wish to create a better world, often through the
dogged efforts of people who work tirelessly for necessary change, sometimes
as individuals, sometimes in groups and organisations, and sometimes as members
of the public coming together to demand justice and a voice. The most effective
form of volunteering is often not short-term reactions but thoughtful, long-term
responses. It is not soft, but gutsy.
