One of the thorniest dilemmas for successful
volunteer retention is often the relationship between volunteer and paid staff
members. As organizations involve more and more people in donated service, more
and more paid staff are required to coach or supervise volunteers who work in
their area of the agency. In order for these working relationships to be successful,
I believe the key ingredient is integrity.
“Integrity”
is defined with words such as honest, complete, unbroken, and strong. Integrity
can refer to physical structures as well as to human interaction. In a building,
integrity refers to the design and construction as being solidly based and put
together neatly, with the weight distributed evenly. A building with integrity
doesn’t fall down at the slightest breeze.
