Volunteer Coordinator
Museum of Science and Technology, Chicago IL

Responsibilities
This individual will implement a comprehensive recruiting plan for volunteers at the Museum of Science & Industry. He/she will conduct the interviewing, orientation and placement of volunteers. This person reports to the volunteer managers and will be a member of a team of volunteer administrators, who work with volunteers and museum staff. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Review applications, contact all new applicants; and conduct new volunteer interviews
  • Schedule candidates for orientations, order and review background checks, and supervise new volunteer placement and transfers.
  • Conduct volunteer orientations, trainings and assist in educating volunteers in the Museum’s Mission, Ideology, Vision and Strategic Priorities, and our important guest-focused culture.
  • Analyze and develop best practices for database and maintain and update volunteer records in database. Prepare monthly and year-end statistical reports.
  • Provide administrative assistance to managers, team captains, and volunteers.
  • Communicate with volunteers through daily in-office greeting and timely e-mails, Vic Net messages, and phone calls.
  • Work with volunteer managers to identify volunteer opportunities within the Museum.
  • Assist managers in planning the annual recognition dinner and plan strategies for additional rewards and recognition.
  • Assist in planning volunteer social, team building and professional development events.
  • Identify additional resources for recruiting volunteers, implement specific strategies for recruiting volunteers for current and upcoming Museum exhibits and programs and develop and maintain a database of these resources.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and two - three years recruiting and/or volunteer administration experience and interviewing skills.
  • Excellent writing, communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Software, i.e., Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, Internet Explorer and data base management.
  • High energy with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Must have transportation for travel throughout Chicago area.
  • Experience working with volunteer programs or working as a volunteer preferred.
  • Available for a schedule based on a 5-day week including one week-end day and possible rotations.
