Description

Linda Graff has given us a definitive work on a sensitive but vital subject. Screening volunteers (and employees) was always an important part of the volunteer coordinator’s job, but in today’s climate of risk and liability, the stakes have risen considerably. In a clear, practical, and compelling way, Linda provides the reader with the rationale for initial screening and ongoing credential checks, models for developing screening processes, and a variety of screening tools--everything to raise your comfort level in dealing with applicants. Written in Canada, the book is truly applicable to any location because its emphasis is on protecting program participants rather than simply on meeting legal requirements.

Readers' Reviews

"Best $25 I've ever spent. Linda Graff addresses the delicate balance between the need to protect the people we serve, our employees and volunteers and the need for an efficient, effective way to recruit, screen and place people. Clear, easy-to-understand and packed with useful information."
--Laurie E. Snyder, Public and Community Relations Consultant

Brief Excerpt

Excerpted from page 126 on "Gut Feelings and Intuitions"
What should you do when you experience misgivings...? The first thing to do is to push yourself to identify precisely what triggered the sense of apprehension. Was it something in the candidate's manner, choice of words, presentation style, body language, or attitude? If you can pinpoint the source of discomfort, then explore it. Is it a legitimate cause for concern, or is it merely a reflection of discomfort with "difference"? Be careful that discrimination against someone not exactly like yourself is not in play.
