This year, due to COVID-19, the course is going online. Participants will engage in lecture, discussions and have opportunities for networking and creative problem solving. This six, half-day course will benefit anyone in the nonprofit, association, and governmental sector who seeks to learn how to build a successful volunteer program. Participants will discover the latest volunteer management trends including how to engage and support virtual and remote volunteers. They will learn key steps in the volunteer management process and develop skills and techniques that are useful to any organizational leader.

Basics of Volunteer Management

The 10-week course will cover volunteer recruitment, retention, risk management, recognition, etc. Graduates of the class will receive one Continuing Education credit from Southeastern Community College (Whiteville, NC), 12 hours toward NCAVA certification as a Certified Administrator of Volunteers in North Carolina, as well as several completed components of the certification portfolio.

Leading Volunteers: Foundations in Volunteer Management

This course is mostly online format, with one in-person session on January 29, 2015 at Volunteer Burnaby. Learn how to: plan a successful volunteer program; recruit and screen potential volunteers; orient, train, supervise and recognize volunteers effectively within your program; and evaluate and market your program effectively. You’ll also get grounded in skills such as giving effective feedback and delegating, as well as building beneficial volunteer-staff relations and negotiating change management. Current trends in the field and supports available to people who manage volunteers will also be a focus. Participants will receive a Certificate of Completion from Volunteer Victoria. Please note that attendance at the morning in-person session is mandatory.

There are four key courses that make up this Certificate. It starts with Foundations (10 weeks); then Spectrum of Volunteer Engagement (10 weeks); then Administration (10 weeks); and finishes with an Applied Project (13 weeks). This Certificate is Ministry of Education Ontario recognized and the courses are all conducted online and in sequence as presented above. This Certificate has a long history of success and just went online in 2014. Each course has great content, a discussion group, assignments and interaction. The course instructor is Donna Lockhart, a well known consultant in volunteer engagement. It is aimed at those wishing to obtain educational certification for working in the field of volunteer management. Donna designed and instructs in 3 of the 4 courses and helped design Spectrum of Engagement, but it is taught by another instructor.

Elective courses may be taken by anyone in any semester and are not restricted to those in the program.
